A farmer wants to cross a
river and take with him a
wolf, a goat, and a cabbage.
There is a boat that can fit
himself plus either the wolf,
the goat, or the cabbage. If
the wolf and the goat are
alone on one shore, the wolf will eat the goat. If
the goat and the cabbage are alone on the shore,
the goat will eat the cabbage.
How can the farmer bring the wolf, the goat, and
the cabbage across the river?

  1. The farmer must first toss the cabbage to the other shore, providing he has a good arm. Since goats HATE water, he must be in the boat with the farmer (also to protect him from the wolf!). Finally, as long as the river is no wider than 8 miles across (assuming it is less then that, since he tossed the cabbage), the wolf should have no problem following what he sees as food in the boat when he follows it across the river. Wallah! The farmer, the cabbage, the goat, and the wolf all arrive at the other side of the river.
